Judge Allegra Walker has appointed attorney Renard Hirsch, Sr. to serve as the referee for the Nashville General Sessions Environmental Court, effective Monday. The court oversees enforcement of Metro Code violations, including regulation of short-term rentals, trash and pets.
Hirsch has been an attorney for more than 30 years, including currently at Smith & Hirsch. He previously served as an instructor at the Nashville School of Law. He takes over the part-time position from attorney John Manson, who was appointed to be one of five night court judicial commissioners, effective at the start of this month.
Manson had held the job for just a few months after assuming the position previously held by Jim Todd, the environmental court referee who resigned in May amid questions about his ownership of short-term rental properties.
Hirsch, a Tennessee State University and NSL graduate, assumes the job shortly after Metro launched an around-the-clock short-term rental complaint hotline. An ad hoc committee of the Metro Council is currently considering updates to the rental regulations Hirsch oversees.
